Dancing Crane, Rising Sun – Idyll Special Edition

I’m delighted to introduce the Scriptorium Summer 2023 Special Edition Pen — Dancing Crane, Rising Sun. This Idyll features a beautiful Argentium Sterling Silver* rollstop, cast by Michael Redburn, depicting a Japanese Dancing Crane against the backdrop of a Rising Sun. The rollstop curves around the shape of the cap for a custom fit. The sparkling pen material in the crane colors of white, red, and black is a custom mix from Jonathon Brooks. Each pen comes with a specially designed Rickshaw Bagworks plush pen sleeve. As with all Scriptorium pens, the nibs are tuned for smoothness and flow by Mark Bacas, Nibgrinder.

The inspiration for this design is based around the magnificent Japanese Red-Crowned Crane, long a popular icon in Japanese myth and lore, symbolizing good luck and immortality. These rare birds are perhaps best known for their distinctive mating dance, from which they earned the nickname of Dancing Crane.

Ten of these special pens are available now, in Small size, with a polished steel nib, for $310 + shipping. Gold nibs are available as special order. Perhaps you might want to consider a 14k or 18k Rhodium nib to enhance your special purchase, or request a custom nib grind from Mark Bacas to make the pen especially yours.

Email me if you’d like to claim one now:  renee@scriptoriumpens.com

For more photos, see the Dancing Crane, Rising Sun gallery.

Once these initial 10 are gone, you can still order one in any size, to be placed in the regular work queue.

In addition, as customers have asked with other Special Editions, this rollstop and the custom crane pen sleeve are available for order with other pen models.

*Argentium Sterling Silver resists tarnishing longer than ordinary sterling silver.

A Mineral Sea Writing Set

Without a doubt, Mineral Sea Lava Explosion owns the title of Favorite Material among my customers. A swirling mix of blues, blacks, and golden orange with some pearly chatoyance, this material comes from the talented hand of Eugene Soto of Muttblanks.com.  This past week, a writing duo in Mineral Sea came to life.

The Oversized Zephyr makes quite a statement with its girth and bold coloring. The Literati Academe Dip Nib Holder draws the eye to its unusual feature of a cap, which is rarely seen on a dip pen. I just recently took a Copperplate calligraphy class, and saw the advantage of a dip pen with a cap for better portability. Of course, there aren’t any caps for oblique dip pens.

Completing this desk set is a two slot pen rest. Normally I make one slot rests, but this customer wanted 2 slots to accommodate both pens.

Another Muttblanks material landed on the lathe this week : Sunflower Sky Lava Explosion. Its whirling blues, yellows, and black resemble Van Gogh’s Starry Night painting. A black ebonite section enhances the grip and breaks the wild color of the rest of this clipless Idyll.

Here’s a sneak peek at a new project I’m working on. Whatever could it be?

Introducing the Idyll

Idyll in Solid Navy Acrylic

The Idyll is the latest model from Scriptorium Pens. After receiving many requests for pens with a flush cap and barrel body style, I decided  to add one officially to the line up. This one went through several prototypes to reach the final shape/profile. It features clean, minimalist lines in the Japanese style and looks great whether clipped, clipless, or with a roll stopper.
