Dancing Crane, Rising Sun – Idyll Special Edition

I’m delighted to introduce the Scriptorium Summer 2023 Special Edition Pen — Dancing Crane, Rising Sun. This Idyll features a beautiful Argentium Sterling Silver* rollstop, cast by Michael Redburn, depicting a Japanese Dancing Crane against the backdrop of a Rising Sun. The rollstop curves around the shape of the cap for a custom fit. The sparkling pen material in the crane colors of white, red, and black is a custom mix from Jonathon Brooks. Each pen comes with a specially designed Rickshaw Bagworks plush pen sleeve. As with all Scriptorium pens, the nibs are tuned for smoothness and flow by Mark Bacas, Nibgrinder.

The inspiration for this design is based around the magnificent Japanese Red-Crowned Crane, long a popular icon in Japanese myth and lore, symbolizing good luck and immortality. These rare birds are perhaps best known for their distinctive mating dance, from which they earned the nickname of Dancing Crane.

Ten of these special pens are available now, in Small size, with a polished steel nib, for $310 + shipping. Gold nibs are available as special order. Perhaps you might want to consider a 14k or 18k Rhodium nib to enhance your special purchase, or request a custom nib grind from Mark Bacas to make the pen especially yours.

Email me if you’d like to claim one now:  renee@scriptoriumpens.com

For more photos, see the Dancing Crane, Rising Sun gallery.

Once these initial 10 are gone, you can still order one in any size, to be placed in the regular work queue.

In addition, as customers have asked with other Special Editions, this rollstop and the custom crane pen sleeve are available for order with other pen models.

*Argentium Sterling Silver resists tarnishing longer than ordinary sterling silver.

2023 Pen World Reader’s Choice Nominee!

I’m thrilled to announce that the Scriptorium Pens Kelmscott Dragonfly has been nominated for Best Artisan Pen for 2023.

I was absolutely stunned when I received the notification. It’s such an honor to be nominated along with the others whose works have been recognized in this category. I worked with Bob Dupras to create the pen material that would reflect the iridescent colors of dragonflies. He came up with a distinctive and spectacular blank. Mike Redburn brought my idea of a Silver Wraparound Dragonfly Clip to life. We all worked hard on this project, and I’m proud to be a part of this trio. Of course, Mark Bacas makes sure that the pen writes as good as it looks!

From the email announcing the nomination:

Established in 1994, the Readers’ Choice Awards is the only international awards program for the pen industry and is based on the votes of PEN WORLD readers. An independent panel of judges carefully selected the nominees from a long list of pens (and inks) featured in the magazine throughout 2022.  There are twelve different categories of recognition and five nominees within each category.

Subscribers cast their votes from the official ballot in the April 2023 issue of PEN WORLD, and voting continues through June 30, 2023. We will notify winners in July and will feature the winners in the August issue of PW. We hope to present the awards at the DC Fountain Pen Supershow.

It truly is a privilege and an honor for PEN WORLD to applaud your artistry and your accomplishments through the Readers’ Choice Awards.

Tolkien selected as Name for Whatchamacallit

The Whatchamacallit now has an official name — the Tolkien.  I received lots of really great name suggestions for the new model, from social media and via email.  Several suggested Tolkien, and it wasn’t a very hard decision for me after I saw that.  Tolkien has been my favorite writer ever since I first read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in 1973. They were a formative part of my childhood, and it will be fun making Tolkien pens. 😊

Check out the Pens for Sale page for Tolkiens that are available for sale now!

Whatchamacallit, Repeat Customer Discounts, and Pricing Changes

For sale is a Whatchamacallit! Here’s a new model with simpler lines, created at the request of a customer. It has a straight body, flush cap and barrel style, with flat ends. Prices will start at $185 for this model, which is significantly lower than my other offerings, because flat-tops require less work, and I want to give back that time-saving as a price reduction to my customers.

I’m calling it the Whatchamacallit for now.  If you have any nifty ideas for the model name, let me know!  renee@scriptoriumpens.com

All Whatchamacallits will be on sale for $185 for the following two weeks (Friday, February 24 – Friday, March 10). After that, prices will start at $185 for regular acrylics and Nikko Ebonite. Alumilites and fancy acrylics will start at $195.

Pricing Changes

In addition to this new model, some overall pricing changes have been made on pens and options.  The Idyll and Zephyr are now $250. All other fountain pen models remain $235.For more details, see the Pricing page: https://scriptoriumpens.com/ordering-a-pen/custom-order-price-list/

Repeat Customer Discounts

I have a huge customer list going back to 2012.  As of today, any repeat customer who places a new order will receive $5 off each pen in their order.  As they say, repeat customers are the best!  Thank you all for helping me build this pen business.
